This was Sally's Christmas with us at RAIN.  She had never seen Santa before, it had probably been many years since she had even been anywhere with a soft bed, good food and time to share alone with a person.

Sally had been living in a "sanctuary".  For her that mean a cage that was next to many other dogs, literally hundreds.  That meant very little time outside, and then with many other room mates.  That meant no one on one time, no beds, no walkies.

I remember meeting Sally, I wondered what my peers were thinking taking the big, black, lanky German Shepherd that was 8 years old.  Would she find a home?  Would she even adjust to life outside a cage?

Almost every Saturday, Sally came to PETsMART.  She even had her own "fan club" who would come and sit on the floor with her, telling her stories of their dogs and petting her soft and gentle head.

Then Sally would go home with one of our wonderful volunteers and live in her home like a family member, even sharing the occasional couch and goodie from the table.

Sally looked "off" this last week, we were very worried and had the vet run some tests.  Nothing really showed up, but her temporary "mom" knew something was not right

I feel really lucky that I was able to say good bye to Sally Saturday, June 5, and that a few of her friends were able to stop by and also give her some love.  Because Sally crossed over the Rainbow Bridge Sunday in her temporary care home.

I think she was happy, she was "rescued" in every sense of the word, she died quietly, outside in the warm sun, on the green grass that she had missed for so many long, long years in her cage.

A great girl, who will be missed.
